בסוף השבוע שעבר התראיין זאב אבן-חן אצל נחום ברנע במוסף "ידיעות אחרונות." אבן-חן איבד באסון הכרמל את בתו, טופז. ברנע הוא בעצמו אב שכול. אני מביא כאן חלק מהראיון

יש לי תחושה מאד עמוקה של אכזבה מהמדינה – ודווקא בתחום הביטחוני, תחום שבו עסקתי שלושים שנה. אני מאוכזב מכך שאין נטילת אחריות. יש לנו ראש ממשלה שלא יודע להתמודד. הוא חושב שלהיות ראש ממשלה זה לעשן סיגרים ולנסוע לחו"ל. 44 משפחות שכלו את יקיריהן באסון הזה, לא רק אני. מדוע הוא לא ביקר אצלן? הוא אפילו לא טילפן. מדוע שרי הממשלה האחרים לא ביקרו משפחות? כשישראלים מביאים כבוד למדינה – ספורטאים למשל – ראש הממשלה משתבח בהם, וזה בסדר. אבל למה כאשר קורה אסון הוא בורח? שיידע לעמוד מול ביקורת. שיהיה גבר

Stop the Aid to Israel!

Like most Israelis, I care much for my country and want to see her prosper. I live in Israel, I have two boys who serve in the Israeli "Defense" Forces, and I have nothing to gain from weakening my country. Therefore, the title above is not meant in any way to hurt the State of Israel - on the contrary.

Most Israelis are proud to say that their country is very solid, powerful and independent, from the economy and military viewpoints. I agree. Thus, the title above should not upset anybody who cares for Israel (but I know that it will); after all, if Israel is so powerful, then why the heck does she need $3B in foreign aid?

Coming to you in the series “things I don’t understand, and probably never will”: the number 1 unclear issue to me is – why is this stupid conflict taking so long to resolve?! I think that it could happen very soon, if the Obama administration gave the Israeli government a simple ultimatum.
We are being told all the time, that Obama, unlike Bush, is an intelligent, rational, and above all – unbiased man, without any commitment to one side or another. He is focused and determined to justify the Nobel Peace prize, which he received prematurely. There are even “good souls” who state that he is a Muslim and even anti-Semite. If that is the case, what stops him from pointing a gun to Netanyahu’s head (metaphorically speaking, of course!), and to tell him: Bibi boy, let's cut the BS. From now on, I not only demand a complete freeze of new constructions in the occupied territories; I demand a practical plan for dismantling the Settlements, on my table tomorrow morning. If I don’t see on my table a detailed plan, with a commitment to a reasonable schedule – then no more aid to you, sir.
Well, obviously this is over-simplistic. In fact, what I suggest here is the exact same demagogic approach, typical to the Right, which I hate so much – as if a 90 years old conflict could be resolved by a flash of a quote from a B-picture.
OK, so let’s make it a little more subtle: not by tomorrow, by the end of next week. And not all settlements – let’s start with those which can be evacuated in a short time period. Let’s leave Ariel and Ma’ale Edomim (two bigger towns, which will be more complicated to evacuate) to the next phase – or to a negotiation.
What’s stops this wonderful scenario from happening?
No, no. This is impossible, you would say. No American President has ever dared to confront the powerful Jewish lobby, and this would mean committing suicide by Obama. But if that is so, then why do they call John Mearsheimer and Stephen Walt – anti-Semites? The book by the two Political Science professors, “The Israel Lobby and U.S. Foreign Policy,” has been compared to “The Protocols of the Elders of Zion”, in that it argues that the Jewry in the US has a legendary influence on the Administration, to the extent that it pushes the US to “support Israel” on the expense of crucial US interests. If the claim of a powerful Jewish community is so bogus, then why should all American presidents be so afraid of failing?
Obviously, there is not much love between Obama and Netanyahu. It is also clear, that Obama is “disappointed,” to say the least, from the rejection of his proposal to Netanyahu, regarding the extension of the Freeze on construction. Obama would prefer that Israel not only will freeze new projects, but would evacuate the majority of Settlements, which no American administration has ever recognized, including the big Jewish neighborhoods in East Jerusalem; this is the reason, by the way, that there are hardly any foreign embassies in the Israeli capital, including the American one.
If all this is so clear, then what does Obama have to worry about?
The main argument against the scenario that I propose is that it will have a boomerang effect: in case of an American pressure on Israel, the entire Israeli public will unite in resistance.
This is a solid argument. In fact, this is the main argument I am using, against the idea of attacking Iran: it will only unite the otherwise diverse and heterogeneous Iranian society.
But in the Israeli case, that’s not what is going to happen. The Israeli public is very diverse, but roughly speaking, about half of it already came to terms with the concept of a Palestinian state residing in most of the territories captures by Israel in 1967, and that includes the evacuation of most of the Settlements. This group is not motivated, in general, by trust in the Palestinian side, nor is it moved by moral considerations, for the most part. Just because of that, those people will not insist on what they see as a more just solution – namely, that the Palestinians would make the concessions. The vast majority of the secular and moderate public is interested in peace, for financial reasons, in the spirit of the life in the Tel-Aviv “bubble”. Evidence to this is the characteristics of the support base of the Liberal party, Meretz: wealthy Ahskenazi people, who belong to the upper or second highest echelons, and have much to lose.
The Israeli secular section, being well educated and with foreign affairs awareness, understands very well the meaning of a confrontation with the superpower of the world; and they are not willing to go there. In case of a serious crisis with the US, they will prefer the voice of reason, over the option of continuing with the Messianic policy of nourishing the Settlements, and hoping for help from heaven.
Another argument is, that Israel actually does not need the US aid. There are even claims, that there is no aid at all! This kind of rhetoric can be found, for example, in the Right-wing periodical “Nativ”. They claim, that that $10 billion loan guarantees that the US gave Israel, actually were a loan for business purpose only, and by very good terms to the lender, too. In addition, most of the money ought to be spent in the US, which would benefit the economy of the latter.
Well, here are the facts:
Since 1987, the US pays the State of Israel real money in the sum of $3 billion per year, out of which $1.8 billion is military aid. This is besides “special aid” such as during the 1991 Gulf War, or the 2003 Iraq War. This also excludes aid to special projects such as the “Arrow” missile, totaling $1.3 billion. In 1996, the Israeli Prime Minister of the time (a guy named Benjamin Netanyahu) decided to discontinue the economic part of the aid, but at the same time, the military part grew to $2.4 billion.
The loan guarantees are actually for loans which Israel borrows elsewhere, so the US does not benefit from them.
The argument that most of the aid is spent in the US, is true. However, ending the aid will cause a severe damage to the support base of Israel within the American public, which currently benefits from the aid.
“Israel is not economically self-sufficient, and relies on foreign assistance and borrowing to maintain its economy. Since 1976, Israel has been the largest annual recipient of U.S. foreign assistance, and is the largest cumulative recipient since World War II.” (1) (From Congressional Report Service, 2004)
Per capita, this is $340; compare to the average US aid to the rest of the world, which is $22.
If this aid stops, then Israel will have to give up expensive weapon systems, such as the “Arrow”, F-35 stealth fighter, and even Merkava tanks. In addition, thousands of Israelis who work in the design, manufacturing and support, will lose their jobs. In the secondary circle, a big section of the Israeli economy, which relies heavily on the military contract industries, will be severely hurt.
The second component of Israel’s neediness is in the foreign policy arena. The last time that the US has put real pressure on Israel was in 1956, when the Israeli military took the entire Sinai peninsula (3 times as big as Israel proper), in just 4 days. David Ben-Gurion, Israel’s first Prime Minister and secretary of Defense, declared: “Eilat will be again (after King Solomon’s regime, around 1000 B.C.) the major Hebrew southern port, and Tiran (at the southern tip of Sinai) will again be part of the Third Israeli Kingdom!” It took just a few days of pressure, and “The Old Man” agreed to give back the entire land to Egypt.
Since then, the US hardly ever used its power to pressure Israel. In 1975, the Ford administration announced a “re-assessment” of the relationships, including a weapons Embargo – and the earth shook. Since then, the US always uses its veto privilege in the UN Security Council, to save Israel dozens of unpleasant resolution, which would otherwise haunt Israel – as do the very few which did pass, such as resolution 242 (calling for all parties to “withdraw from Territories which were captured by force”).
Without the continuous American diplomatic support, Israel would be far more isolated and weakened, even more that the dire state in which she is now. The faith that “it doesn’t matter what the Goyim will say,” is no longer common in the Israeli public – except for the followers of Rabbi Kook (the Guru of the religious Right).
Therefore I hereby call the almighty American Jews, and President Obama: if you really care for the future of Israel, if it is precious to you as much as it is to me – then start putting pressure on Israel’s government! Do it instead of sending your spoiled children to 2-week trips to the best part of the country. Call your congressperson, and demand the end of the generous aid. You will be surprised, how fast our brave, ex-commando officer PM chickens under real pressure. We, the majority of the people in Israel, will back you up all the way!

כמו רוב הישראלים, מדינת ישראל חשובה לי ואני מעוניין בהצלחתה ובשגשוגה. למי שמתקשה בהבנה: אני חי בישראל, יש לי שני בנים המשרתים בצבא ה"הגנה" לישראל, ואין לי שום סיבה לרצות לפגוע בה. לכן, הכותרת שלמעלה איננה קוראת לפגיעה בישראל - להיפך. אני קורא להפסקת הסיוע האמריקאי לישראל כי זה יפעל לטובתה

רוב הישראלים גאים לומר שישראל חזקה, משגשגת ומצליחה, בעיקר בזכות חוסנה הכלכלי והצבאי. אני מסכים לכך. לכן, הכותרת שלמעלה לא אמורה להרגיז אף ישראלי אחד או אחת (אבל ברור לי, שהם יתרגזו ממנה). הלא, אם ישראל כל כך חזקה, אז בשביל מה היא צריכה סיוע בסך 3 מיליארד דולר מהדוד העשיר מאמריקה? אם, כמו שטוענים בימין הישראלי, אנחנו יכולים להסתדר לבד, תודה רבה - אז מדוע מי שקורא להפסקת הסיוע האדיר הזה נחשב לבוגד

במסגרת "דברים שאני לא מבין וכנראה לעולם לא אבין", כמו למשל איך אנשים אינטליגנטים שאני אשכרה מכיר, עם חוש הומור מתוחכם, צוחקים מהסדרה "אחד העם 101" – העניין הכי לא מובן בעיני הוא, מדוע הסכסוך המטומטם הזה לא מגיע לידי סיום באמצעות אולטימטום מצד ארה"ב לישראל
הלא אומרים לנו כל הזמן, שאובאמה, בניגוד לבוש ולקודמיו, הוא אדם אינטליגנט, מפוקח ובעיקר חסר פניות, בלתי מחוייב לצד זה או אחר, נחוש וממוקד מאד להצדיק את פרס הנובל שקיבל לפני מעשה. יש נשמות טובות שאפילו מציינות, שהוא בעצם מוסלמי ואף אנטישמי. אם כך, מה הבעיה שלו לכוון לנתניהו אקדח (מטאפורי, כמובן) לרקה, ולומר לו: חביבי, מספיק עם המשחקים. לא רק המשך הקפאה אני דורש, אלא תכנית מעשית לפירוק ההתנחלויות, שתונח על שולחני מחר בבוקר. אם עד מחר אתה לא מביא לי תכנית מפורטת, עם לוחות זמנים – אין יותר סיוע לישראל
טוב, ברור שזה פשטני מדי, ובעצם אני נוקט כאן את הגישה הדמגוגית שאופיינית לימין, וששנואה עלי כל כך – כאילו אפשר לפתור סכסוך בן תשעים שנה באיבחת משפט שנלקח ממערבון אמריקאי זול
אם כך, בואו נעדן את זה קצת: לא עד מחר בבוקר, אלא עד השבוע הבא. ולא את כל ההתנחלויות, אלא רק את אלה שניתן לפרק בזמן קצר. את מעלה אדומים ואריאל נשאיר לשלב הבא – או למשא ומתן
מה בעצם מונע את התרחיש האופטימי הזה
לא, תאמרו, זה בלתי אפשרי. שום נשיא אמריקאי לא העז להתעמת עם "הקול היהודי", וניסיון כזה יהיה התאבדות פוליטית מצד אובאמה. אבל אם זה כך, מדוע מכנים את ג'ון מירשהיימר וסטיבן וולט, שני הפרופסורים שטוענים לשליטה של הארגונים היהודיים על הממשל – אנטישמיים? את ספרם של וולט ומירשהיימר, "הלובי למען ישראל ומדיניות ארה"ב", השוו המבקרים ל"פרוטוקולים של זקני ציון", בכך שהוא מייחס שליטה אגדית של הממסד היהודי בארה"ב על הממשל האמריקאי, עד כדי כך שהמימשל פועל, בהשפעת היהודים, לטובת ישראל על חשבון האינטרסים האמריקאים. אם הטענה שהממסד היהודי חזק כל כך מופרכת, אז מדוע אובאמה וכל נשיא שקדם לו צריכים לחשוש כל כך מכישלון
הלא ברור שאין חיבה גדולה בין אובאמה לנתניהו. ברור גם, שאובאמה "מאוכזב", בלשון המעטה, מדחיית ההצעה שלו להאריך את הקפאת הבניה בשטחים הכבושים. ברור שאובאמה היה מעוניין שישראל לא רק תקפיא את הבניה, אלא תפרק לפחות את רוב ההתנחלויות, ששום ממשל אמריקאי, גם האוהד ביותר לישראל, מעולם לא קיבל כלגיטימיות – כולל השכונות היהודיות במזרח ירושלים; וזאת אגב הסיבה לכך ששגרירות ארה"ב בישראל נמצאת עד היום, כמו השגרירויות של כל מדינות העולם כמעט, בתל אביב ולא בבירת ישראל
אם כל זה ברור, אז ממה צריך אובאמה לחשוש
הטענה העיקרית כנגד התכנית שאני מציע, היא שבמקרה של לחץ אמריקאי, הציבור היהודי יתאחד כאיש אחד להדוף את המתקפה
זאת טענה חזקה. אגב, זאת אחת הטענות שבהן אני משתמש כנגד הרעיון לתקוף את איראן מהאוויר – זה רק יאחד את הציבור באיראן כנגד המערב
אבל במקרה של הציבור הישראלי, הטענה איננה נכונה. הציבור היהודי בישראל מורכב מגוונים רבים. אבל בחלוקה גסה, ניתן לומר שכמחציתו (למעשה הרבה יותר) כבר מזמן השלים עם האפשרות של כינון מדינה פלסטינית על רובם הגדול של השטחים הכבושים, כולל פינוי רוב ההתנחלויות. זהו ציבור שאינו מונע מאמון רב בפלסטינים, או משיקולים מוסריים במיוחד, ודווקא משום כך הוא לא יתעקש על פיתרון שנראה לו צודק יותר – כלומר, שהפלסטינים יוותרו. רוב הציבור החילוני והמתון בישראל מעוניין בשלום בעיקר ממניעים כלכליים, ברוח ההסתגרות בבועה המאפיינת את החיים החברתיים בישראל של היום. יעיד על כך מצבו העגום של השמאל האידיאולוגי, וההרכב האנושי של בסיס התמיכה של מפלגות כמו מר"צ: בעיקר אשכנזי, שבע, מהעשירונים העליונים, חושש לעתידו
הציבור החילוני המרכזי, שהוא ציבור משכיל יחסית, מבין את המשמעות של עימות עם המעצמה החזקה בעולם, ואינו מעוניין בכך. במקרה של משבר אמיתי עם ארה"ב, הוא יעדיף את קול התבונה, על פני המשך המדיניות המשיחית של טיפוח ההתנחלויות וציפייה לעזרה מידי שמים
טענה שנייה היא, שבעצם ישראל איננה זקוקה לסיוע. יש אפילו טענות, שהובעו למשל בכתב העת הימני "נתיב", שטוענים שבעצם אין כלל סיוע! טענתם היא, שהערבויות שהעניקה ארה"ב לישראל בעקבות העלייה מברה"מ לשעבר, בסך 10 מיליארד דולר, הן למעשה הלוואה ממניעים עסקיים גרידא, ובתנאים טובים מאד למלווה; ובנוסף לכך, רוב הכסף מיועד להוצאה בארה"ב, מה שייטיב עם כלכלתה של ארה"ב עצמה

ובכן, להלן העובדות

החל משנת 1987 ארה"ב משלמת לישראל בערך 3 מיליארד דולר בכל שנה, מהם 1.8 מיליארד סיוע צבאי. זאת לבד מסיוע מיוחד הניתן לפי הצורך, למשל במלחמת המפרץ הראשונה ב-1991, ובמלחמת עיראק ב-2003. זה גם לא כולל סיוע לפרויקטים מיוחדים כדוגמת טיל ה"חץ", בסך 1.3 מיליארד. בשנת 1996 החליט ראש הממשלה אז (בנימין נתניהו...) להפסיק את המרכיב הכלכלי בסיוע, אך מאז צמח המרכיב הצבאי ל-2.4 מיליארד.

עברה שנה ואנחנו שוב כאן, לזכור את אבא

שנית, מפני שבעיני, הפורעים והאלימים בסיפור הזה הם חיילי השייטת, ולא פעילי השלום שבאו לפרוץ את המצור הבלתי צודק על עזה

מאבקם לעצמאות של הפלסטינים, ושל תומכיהם ההולכים ומתרבים בעולם, הוא מאבק צודק על פי כל קנה מידה הגון ומוסרי, גם על פי המוסר היהודי. זאת, גם בהסתייגות המתבקשת, שהאמצעים שנוקטים חלק מהפלסטינים, הם נפשעים ובלתי מוצדקים. הטרור שמפעילות קבוצות שונות, שהפכו לאחרונה לקבוצות שוליים, איננו משנה את הצדק הבסיסי בדרישה של הפלסטינים להיות עם חופשי בארצם
מכאן נובע, שכל פעולה המגבילה את חירותם ושוללת את זכויותיהם של תושבי רצועת עזה, וזה כולל מצור ימי – איננה צודקת ואיננה מוסרית. לנוכח מצור כזה, מוצדק להתנגד, גם באלימות – למעט אלימות נגד אזרחים שאינם נושאים נשק. חיילי השייטת הם לוחמים מאומנים, וגם אם מישהו החליט בשבילם, משיקולים של תדמית בלבד, שלא להעלות נשק חם אל סיפון האוניה – הרי הם חיילים חמושים לכל דבר, שביכולתם להפעיל אלימות ואף להרוג, כפי שאכן עשו לצערנו הרב
לנוכח השתלטות בכוח על אוניה שמטרתה לפרוץ מצור בלתי צודק, יש לנוסעי האוניה כל זכות שבעולם להתנגד להשתלטות, גם בכוח. התקשורת בישראל, שהיא חופשית בימים רגילים אבל מתגייסת ל"שירות האומה" במצבי "חירום", התייצבה כאיש אחד, בניצוחו של דובר צה"ל, כדי ליצור מצג שווא. מי שצרך בימים אלה רק חדשות בעברית, קיבל את הרושם שנוסעי ספינות הסיוע ההומניטרי היו חמושים בנשק חם, ושכוונתם העיקרית הייתה להשתמש בו על מנת להרוג. בדרנים ודברנים המתחזים לעיתונאים, כמו הכתב הצבאי של הערוץ הראשון, רוני דניאל, תיארו את האירוע במילים "נשמעו יריות לעבר חיילי צה"ל, מה שמוכיח שעל הספינה היה נשק חם". מה שה"כתב" הזה שכח להזכיר הוא, שהנשק הזה נחטף מידי חיילי השייטת.

אוקיף סיפר ששלושה חיילים נשבו על ידי הנוסעים למשך כחצי שעה, דבר שהיה יכול להתפתח לפיגוע מיקוח מביך עד אימה מבחינתה של ממשלת ישראל – אלמלא שוחררו השלושה, ביוזמת נוסעי הספינה, ללא פגע. לנוכח הנכונות של המפגינים לסכן את חייהם, בלחימה הרואית נגד לוחמי קומנדו ימי - די ברור ששום דבר לא מנע מהם לפגוע בחיילי השייטת השבויים, ששכבו בבטן האוניה כפותים ורועדים מפחד. העובדה שהמפגינים לא נרתעו מעימות אלים נגד חיילי קומנדו מאומנים, מוכיחה שלא החשש מפני הסתבכות עם השלטונות הישראליים מנע מהם לפגוע בשבויים. אני השתכנעתי מכנות דבריו של אוקיף, שטען בראיון שהם שחררו את השבויים מפני שלא באו כדי להרוג או לפגוע, אלא באמת כדי להעביר סיוע הומניטרי לפלסטינים. טענתה של ישראל, שניתן היה להעביר את הסיוע דרך שלטונות ישראל – מאבדת את אמינותה לנוכח ההתנהגות שאינה מעוררת אמון של ישראל במהלך הסכסוך, כמו הקפאת כספי המיסים הפלסטיניים, ההפרות המתמשכות של הסכמים, ועוד.
בעיני, מדהים ההבדל בין מידת הכנות והאותנטיות הנושבת מדבריו של אוקיף בראיון, לבין השקרים וחצאי האמיתות שפירסם דובר צה"ל. לאוקיף, שחטף מכות על הספינה, ולטענתו גם בעת שהיה במעצר, יש כל הסיבות להיות כועס וממורמר. אבל בראיון הוא נשמע רגוע וכמעט מפויס, ונימת דבריו עניינית ונטולת רוע. דובר צה"ל, לעומתו, תיאר אותו כ"שונא ישראל" שבא כדי לאמן לוחמים פלסטיניים. ממש, החמאס זקוק לקשישים ששרתו במארינס לפני 18 שנה כדי שיאמנו אותם. כמו כן כינה דובר צה"ל את המפגינים "שכירי חרב". איך אפשר לחשוב על מפגינים אלה כעל אנשי לגיון הזרים, שבאו לסכן את חייהם תמורת כסף? אין גבול לאבסורד

An open letter to an Israeli Immigration Officer

RE: the denial of entry to Noam Chomsky

Mr. Israeli Immigration officer,
I wonder what the qualifications for your job are.
When you decided to deny entry from Noam Chomsky, what exactly were you thinking?
I mean, let us give you some credit. I will assume that you didn’t really worry that Chomsky, an 81 year old MIT professor, would wear a bomb belt and blow himself up in a Tel Aviv main street. It makes sense that even you, an Israeli establishment official, didn’t really have this scenario in mind. It makes more sense that you were afraid that Prof. Chomsky, in his planned talk to a Palestinian audience in Bir-Zeit, would instigate them against the Israeli government. And it doesn’t really matter what you, or I, or Prof. Chomsky himself, think about the conflict. The only thing that matters, for the sake of this discussion, is whether you thought the consequences of your decision through, or not.
Let us consider the situation that you so bravely prevented. You, in your heroic action, made sure that Prof. Chomsky did not talk in Bir-Zeit, and his dangerous influence on the Palestinian’s minds was, thank God almighty, avoided.
But did you think what would happen next? For example, did you envision the organizers of the event, telling the audience: “Brothers and sisters, unfortunately Prof Chomsky will not be able to speak to us tonight. This is not because he broke his leg, or because he just didn’t feel like coming. In fact, he made the effort to travel to Jordan, and waited 3 hours on the Israeli side of the border control, before he was told that the Israeli government wouldn’t grant his entry to Palestine. You are all familiar with the sensitivity of those Jews to their security, so we hope you understand. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. Good night and God bless you.”
Now, Mr. brave and smart immigration officer, you can tap yourself on the shoulder: you prevented another provocative talk from an anti-Semitist self-hater American Jew. And now, the audience will appreciate us for our cautious procedures. It's not enough that the Israeli government keeps them under what they see as brutal and unjust occupation, but on top of that, does not allow outsiders to come and speak to them about that – well, what would they think, really?
Think about it, if you haven’t done so yet: In the absence of Chomsky, is it possible that somebody else can tell them about their miserable situation? Or remind them of the endless lines at the checkpoints, of the hours it takes to travel a distance of 10 miles, and in general, of the lack of basic human and national rights?
But there is another issue here, much more severe than whether or not the Chomsky speech would have added to their knowledge of the situation. Did you consider the effect of the cancellation of the talk, on the feelings and thoughts of the Palestinians?
I’m not asking this question, God forbid, out of concern to those people’s emotions. I am only discussing the effect that this might have on the intensity of this conflict.

Mr. officer, I don’t blame you of disloyalty to your country. This is not our way in the Left camp. It is much more common among Right wing speakers, in Israel and everywhere else, to leave aside any due-point arguments, and just blame the other party of betrayal. I’m not like them. Actually, I am sure that you did what you did out of honest care to your country. So, what did you think would be the effect of denying a person to speak, on the hearts and minds of those who feel humiliated, oppressed and occupied, on a daily basis? Did you really consider this, and decided that we are better off with the anger and frustration of the students and teachers in Bir-Zeit, so long as they just can’t hear what Chomsky has to say?

We should not even mention the costly price, that Israel will pay in the international arena, in which our situation is not so bright at this moment, to begin with. Well, for one thing, you can claim that Israel is already used to this. Second, this should never be a concern, because those Goyim all hate us anyway. And third, well, you are just an immigration officer. Nobody expects you to think that far.

It’s good to know, Mr. immigration officer, that such brilliant and capable persons take care of our most sensitive security and good image matters. I salute you for an excellent job.

(The money could be better used for supporting Israeli victims of Hamas and fighting terror!)
This is actually tax money that belongs to the Palestinians, and the Israeli government illegally confiscates.
According to the agreements, Israel is supposed to collect the tax money in the checkpoints, and transfer it to the PA.

"אחרי דודו טופז." עכשיו אתם מאופסים.

אז באמת, פרופסור אוחנה: "יטלטל אותנו"? I actually don't know what she had to apologize for - according to the Bible, the Jews did kill all the people of Jericho, men women and children, just like the Nazis did.

Today, only around 45,000 Palestinians have work permits (they must say a big "thank you" for that) .
So you think that one has to say "thank you" for getting the very basic human rights. That's pure racism.

"Israel must obey the standards of international diplomatic manners". (Since the election of Turkish Prime Minister, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey has
repeatedly criticized and snubbed Israel . An occasional snub from Israel is a healthy treatment for enemies of the Jews.)
Even in Israel, there is a general consensus (majority of opinion), that this incident caused a HUGE damage to Israel's foreign affairs.

Israelis in Haiti - a complicated viewpoint

Hurray to the Israeli delegation to Haiti!

Well, first, I don’t intend to be cynical here. I actually applaud the delegation of physicians and rescue personnel who made the transatlantic travel, and were the first to set up a field hospital in Port-O-Prince.
The point that I would like to make, though, is this: As an Israeli, I have the feeling that the Israeli people, and that includes almost everybody, are using this event, maybe unintentionally, as a diversion from what is happening in Israel (or rather, in Palestine).
To be perfectly clear about this, let us separate two things.
The first thing is that the men and women who were deployed to Haiti from Israel, not only have done a great job in saving the lives of a few hundred people; they also did it for the right reasons, for the most part – namely, really for the sake of humanity, life saving, and all the right values. I’m saying “for the most part”, just because, to be perfectly honest, and with all due respect to those fine people – they are also aware of the benefits that this gives to Israel, politically. And rightly so!
Just as a side note to this post: one reservation comes to mind, regarding the motives of such a good deed, and that is - being an extraordinary and unusual mission – it also comes with some significant benefits to the members of the delegations, themselves. I’m not talking about money, of course. I’m referring to the satisfaction, thrill, and even the joy, in the most pure and good form of those feelings. I’m not suggesting that they don’t deserve them – on the contrary; I’m not saying that it’s a pleasant mission – it’s not. It’s horrible, demanding and difficult at the highest levels. Those people are being exposed to the most horrific views known to humans. Yet, it’s not rare to see people fighting over the right to be in the delegation, and not only because of the utmost necessity of this mission. But enough, this is hard to explain to somebody who hasn’t been in these types of situations.
The second issue involved here, totally separately from the first, is the use of this event, and the response to it, by the Israeli government and media. They are simply and cynically using the photos of the Israeli flag, flying over the stadium in the Haitian capital, to cleanse their conscience from the crimes that they (the Israeli government, not the Israeli people as a whole) are committing against the Palestinians.
I know what you are thinking while reading this. “Why not give the credit, once some good deed is done? Why be so cynical?”. Well, here’s why: the Israeli politicians, headed by Prime Minister Nethanyahu, who decided on dispatching this delegation, are the ultimate example of cynicism. They don’t really care for the people of Haiti. They don’t care about 3 million people, much closer to home, who live as second class residents in a territory controlled by the country that they manage, without national or even some human rights. They don’t even care about their own people, 80% of whom share only 56% of the wealth; 24% of whom living under the poverty line, according to the Israeli government itself. (1)
They only care for one thing – staying in power.
The touching and moving pictures of people helping in Haiti are an important message of humanity. But they also help Bibi and his gang to stay in power. They do this by creating an image, for a country that doesn’t deserve it. They do it by giving its people both the excuse to continue supporting some terrible things that are done in their names; as well as, at the same time, creating for them the mindset, that they are always the victims; because they are only doing good, and the World doesn’t recognize it. In summary, we are more moral than the entire world, we are good and sophisticated and powerful in our goodness and high technology; and at the same time, we are so weak and miserable by not being understood as such; by being so harshly criticized by the international media (which, by the way, actually praised Israel for the good job in Haiti).
Just read some quotes from some of the very fine persons who served in Haiti: “We will travel there, save lives, we will get ‘Kudos’, and then what? Will they love us more around the world? Will they remember it the next time we bombard Gaza?...” Another one said: “This is coming to us at the best timing possible. Now that we finished recruiting new people to our Unit, we are also getting some real-life training, on a special budget…”. (2) Let me be very clear: I am not questioning the noble motives of the fine gentleman who was quoted; I’m just saying, there is more to it than what is visible on a 2-minute item on TV.
This is what the average person in Israel is thinking: “We can’t be that bad if we were the first country to offer real help in Haiti” (which is, well, close to be true; other countries sent some relief too, but we didn’t see much of it on Israeli TV). Well, sometimes two things can be true at the same time: The Israelis are very well trained to respond to disasters – mind you, it’s not so much fun to live in a country which specializes in those kinds of things! – and, at the same time, the Israelis, most of them without their real intention, share the responsibility to a big crime that is lasting for 43 years, namely – the occupation and oppression of the Palestinian people.
And what about the responsibility of the Palestinians themselves, for their situation? – Well that’s a good subject for another post. But like I said, two things can be true at the same time.

The Oslo Accord, Settlements, and anti-Semitism

Dear readers,

Here is another interesting correspondence that I had with Mr. Shamrak:

Me: "Check out the recent increase in anti-Semitism (the real one), it's all because of the occupation."

Shamrak: "The sharp rise of anti-Semitism began immediately after the Oslo agreement!"

First, that's another "inaccuracy" of yours (this is in order not to say the L word).

The chart above was taken from the Anti-Defamation League web site: www.adl.org , which you should consider a reliable source. I met with their Director, Mr. Abe Foxman. This is by no means a Leftist organization.

The chart clearly shows a decline in anti-semitist events, following the year 1993 (when the Oslo process began). There is, however, a clear rise after the year 2000, the year that the negotiations failed, and the Second Intifada started, during which the Israeli military killed hundreds of innocent Palestinians.

So, with all my resentment to anti-semitism, like any other form of racism - I can't blame them for being antisemitic.

Not only did the occupation not subside, but on the contrary - since 1993 the number of Jewish settlers has grown by 150%, as of 2008! That's 2.5 times over:

In addition, it's interesting to look at the correlation between Anti-Semitic incidents, and the number of victims of Israeli terror, among Palestinians.

After 1993, there has been a steady decline in casualties; which fits well the trend of anti-semitist events. But then, after 2000, the number of dead Palestinians has sharply increased again. Here are the data:

Between 1987 (first Intifada) and 1993, 1,100 Palestinians were killed by the IDF, and another 62 by Israeli civilians. Among those, 241 and 13, respectively, were minors under 17. That's an average of 157 and 9 killed per year, respectively. Clearly, many if not most of the dead were innocent people.

After 1993 and on to 2000, however, the number dropped to 39 per year (a reduction of 75%). Notice, however, that the Israeli civilians (most of them settlers) who killed Palestinians, were not so impressed by the Oslo accord, and their average per year remained at around 7.

Then, between 2001 and 2008, a staggering number of 4,791 Palestinians were killed by the IDF, that's 532 per year.

No wonder that the Palestinians hated us more than the usual, before 1993 and after 2000.

appointed anti-Semitism czar (it took Obama a while to find an

Rosenthal blasted the Israeli government. She characterized as "most
unfortunate" a decision by Michael Oren, Israel's ambassador to the
United States, to not attend the annual dinner in September of J
Street, a (self-appointed) lobby group that is mostly led by
left-leaning (anti-Israel and anti-Jewish)

and say - I disagree with it. Half of the population in Israel isn't
anti-Semitic by not agreeing with policies." (If this is so, will she
call for the investigation of war crimes allegedly committed by the US
army in Afghanistan and Iraq?)

2009, 71 were committed by or among Arabs and Druze. The vast majority

Arab sector, where 85 events of planting bombs and 65 of throwing
grenades at targets were recorded
By whom? Those are sheer lies.



In Spite of Having Oil. A report published by the United Nations
Development Program and the Arab League shows that 40% of people in
Arab countries live under the poverty line, a figure that has not
changed over the past 20 years. In addition, unemployment among young
people in the Arab world ranks among the highest in the world.
This is actually true.

Message to anti-Israel Objectors.

An answer to Steven Shamrak, vol. 4

Dear readers,

I guess you know the routine already… here goes:

IDF Can when Politicians Want. Security Services in partnership with

soldiers of the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) killed the murderers of
Rabbi Meir Avshalom Chai. All three were convicted terrorists who had
been committed to and later released from Israeli prisons.
This is actually killing without trial, which is considered a severe crime in any civilized country, except, of course, Israel.

*Goldstone Report Works Both Ways.* Fifteen Israelis who were injured
by Kassam rockets from Gaza Arab terrorists during Operation Cast Lead
have filed a lawsuit against Hamas in a Belgian court. The Israelis
are demanding that Belgian authorities issue international arrest
warrants for senior Hamas terrorists, including Khaled Mashaal, Ismail
Haniyeh, Mahmoud a-Zahar, Ahmad Jabbari, and Muhammad Deff. Part of
the case rests upon the Goldstone report, which ruled that Kassam
rocket fire by Hamas was a violation of international law, and that
the court could not ignore the case.

*Swastikas on Walls of Ancient Synagogue near Hevron.** * A group of
Jews, in a rare visit to the ruins of an ancient synagogue in a PA
controlled village southwest of Hevron, was shocked to discover that
swastikas had been scrawled on the walls. (No international outrage.
It was not even covered by the mainstream news! Why is Arab/Muslim
thuggery not news worthy?)
Interestingly, no word from you about anti-Arab and anti-Islamic graffiti, which is left intact for years on the walls of Arab neighborhoods, whose legal residents were forced out by the apartheid Israeli regime.

government discussed imposing limitations on the sale of alcoholic
beverages. Under the proposed rules, individuals under 21 will not be
able to purchase alcoholic beverages, and no sales will be permitted
after 11 PM. In addition, drinking in public places would be
prohibited, and alcohol will be sold only in specially licensed
stores. 2. Five men were stabbed in a mass brawl that broke out in
Kiryat Gat early on Saturday a week ago over music blasting from a
car. ''The husband (of kiosk owner) was stabbed and seriously wounded.
A number of passersby came to his aid, and four more people were
stabbed,'' said a police spokeswoman.
So you are suggesting that only non-Jews drink and commit crimes? How low can you go, you racist low-life?

Hypocrisy of the Headlines.* *

* - Why don't Arabs feel 'tarnished' wearing the well deserved tag of
blood-thirsty terrorists, anti-crusaders bigots and heroin pushers?
Where are the headlines about it?
Because there are equally blood-thirsty terrorists among the Jews in this land.

*Opposition to Rabin Bank Note.** *Bank of Israel was asked by Land
of Israel activists to reconsider its decision to put the portrait of
former Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin on bank notes: "Let it be clearly
understood that Rabin's image was controversial... Rabin caused
inestimable and indescribable damage to the state of Israel." (And it
is conveniently forgotten that Yitzhak Rabin was a Haganah commander
who carried out the attack on the Irgun weapon supply boat, the
Altalena, killing and wounding Jews and sinking the boat, at the time
when Jews needed weapons most!)
This is exactly why the late Rabin deserves a note. He fought against Jewish terrorists who were responsible for the killings of hundreds of innocent Arabs during the period 1931 - 1938. All documented by the Jewish underground Etze"l itself, in the book "Chronicles of the War for Independence," by Yaakov Amrami and Arieh Melitz, 1951.
